Preserving Food By Canning, Dehydrating, and Fermenting

Description: Participants learn how to can, dehydrate and ferment food for long-term storage. Everyone will go home with multiple jars of preserved food.

Cost: $35 for non-KPI members; $30 for KPI members
Mapping Land Contour Lines

Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Place: Since this workshop will be held at a private farm near Lawrence, KS, we will email the exact address to enrollees just prior to the workshop date.

Description: Participants will construct a landscape compass and get hands on experience using it. They will also use a sight level and a laser transit level to find contour lines on a landscape. Pro's and cons of all 3 methods will be discussed.

Designing Annual Garden Beds

Place: Westside Presbyterian Church at 1024 Kasold Dr., Lawrence, Kansas

Description: Participants will learn the principles of vegetable succession (what to plant when to maximize productivity of the garden) followed by creating a succession plan for the community garden at the host site. Participants will then construct six hugel-based garden beds, and learn how to amend soil, prevent grasses from taking over the garden, and utilize a variety of sustainable gardening tools.

Creating Sheet Mulch

Time: 1-4 PM

Place: Windstone Farm, 2198 Phillips Rd., Perry KS.

Description: Participants in this sheet mulching workshop will learn how to rapidly establish perennial plantings and get hands on experience planting a diverse understory below fruit trees through the mulched layers.
